It was a Friday in 2009. All the good Calvin College students were making their way to 10AM Chapel. The music started. I was still getting situated when I heard the most beautiful voice. I looked up, taken aback, and saw Becky Kim. She had the longest, most beautiful thick hair; I remember she was wearing turquoise earrings, and I thought to myself, "This girl looks like a real-life Pocahontas, sings like a goddess, and I must be friends with her."
I'm a person who has friend crushes and decides to make people my friends. I will seek after you and invest in you. I'm also a person who's childhood consisted of pretending to be Pocahontas until an age that I usually don't admit (read: 24, present age, playing right now). Becky didn't stand a chance; she was going to be my friend.
To my immense joy, Becky and I clicked in person even more than I thought we did in my friend crush build up. We became fast friends. I lived with her each following year and grew to appreciate her love for the Lord, her calm, encouraging presence, and her massive, open heart. Becky, you're a gem. Thanks for making time to see me while I was in LA.
